Navin is an eclectic performer, known for integrating various styles of music into his playing whilst maintaining an appreciation and devotion to traditional styles of violin. His diverse career launched with his work as a session musician and performer with bands including 'Catch Release' and 'Colour Strung'. A rare combination of perfect pitch and Synesthesia (seeing colours as he hears music) allows him to be an exceptional improviser and talented songwriter.
Navin honed his craft under the teaching directions of Roy Theaker and Dr Curt Thompson at the Melbourne Conservatory of Music, where he completed his Graduate Diploma of Music in violin performance in 2015. Now in high demand for musicals, operas, and productions, his eagerness to embrace as much music as possible led to him buying his first viola this year. A week after picking up the instrument Navin had booked a show.
Navin has toured Mainland China performing with the Australian International Opera Company and currently plays with the Australian Discovery Orchestra. Outside of his performing career, Navin teaches privately and in schools across Melbourne.
With deep ties to his Sri Lankan heritage, Navin has also dedicated many years to working in the community and offering his talents both as a musician and mentor in Australia and overseas. If he’s lucky enough to get some free time in his packed schedule you can find him enjoying a run or playing ultimate frisbee.
