Music for a Modern Fairytale

Photography by Phoebe Powell

The classics are classics for a reason, but like all treasured things, once upon a time they were brand new and trendsetting. For lovers of nostalgia and tradition, there are many tried and true song choices in our repertoire. However, for those wanting a day that reflects the here and now, including the greatest hit songs of this century is definitely the way to go. After all, it’s your love story, and it deserves a completely unique soundtrack!

When you think about traditional wedding music, perhaps a String Quartet playing Pachelbel's Canon comes to mind. While this is not without truth, it's definitely not the whole truth. How about we try these instead?

The Aisle Walk

Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is renowned for her modern-day love songs. Ever since Bridgerton featured this song in its first season, Wildest Dreams has grown in popularity. If there was one song that screamed "Modern Fairytale", this would be it! We expect it will cause a few happy tears amongst your family and friends.

Chateau by Angus & Julia Stone

Who says nostalgia has to be left out entirely? This modern love song has such a wistful and romantic vibe to it that it has become a modern classic in its own right. Starting sweetly, simple and understated, the song slowly builds in hope and anticipation, making it perfectly paced for your walk down the aisle.

When The Party's Over by Billie Eilish

The string quartet arrangement of this song is nothing short of divine. Filled with songbird-like trills, delicate harmonics, and cascading melodies, this exquisite song is truly something special. While those familiar with the lyrics may consider this a sad song, as an instrumental song we only hear tenderness.

Halo by Beyoncé

With billions of streams online, this song is undoubtedly a favourite of many. Beyoncé's angelic anthem is filled with a kind of empowerment that makes you want to shout your love from the rooftops! We love the way this pop song begins hushed and delicate, and then erupts in absolute joy.

Hoppípola by Sigur Ros

This song evokes feelings of doves flying, curtains parting, eyes glimmering and those passionate kisses at the end of romantic movies. Hoppípola is brimming with so many wonderful emotions, throughout its lush highs and fragile lows. There's something so magical about this modern Icelandic song.

The Exit Music

When You Were Young by The Killers

For the couple who loves long drives to nowhere, sing-screaming at the top of their lungs along to their favourite songs, this early 2000's rock song is the perfect cue for your grand exit. Plus, our exceptionally talented violinist gets to live their best guitar solo life - I promise you that’s a good thing for everyone!

Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Sugar, and spice and everything nice, that's what this song is made of! This feel-good folk tune is fit for your drive into the sunset… "and they lived happily ever after!" *roll credits* Nothing gets more wholesome than this. As a string arrangement, it switches between arco and pizzicato, creating some very fun textures.

Blinding Lights by The Weeknd

Feel like dancing your way down the aisle? This song will have toes tapping, and shoulders swaying all the way to the back row. It’s undeniably cool, and the perfect choice for the end of your ceremony, teasing at the party to follow at your reception.

Pompeii by Bastille

From the first notes, this anthemic song makes you feel like you could conquer the world. Isn’t that how we all feel when we’re in love? The driving tempo and uplifting chord progression make it the perfect song to celebrate a life changing moment!

Positions by Ariana Grande

We know, it’s a little naughty, but we’re definitely not judging! Without any lyrics, it’s just an infectiously grooving song that is always at the top of our playlist. When a string quartet performs this sultry R’n’B pop song, it feels like the perfect expression of the wedding tradition “something old, something new”.
